Are you wearing something green?

The Editrix

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Everyone’s Irish today, so here at ChronicBabe HQ we’re wearing cute green accessories so we don’t get pinched. HQ is actually mobile today: Editrix Jenni is in Austin, Texas at SXSWinteractive, hearing some terrific presentations—including one about how technology impacts health care. She’s on her way home to Chicago later today and will share what she’s learned with you soon!

New today at ChronicBabe.com: Travel tips for sick chicks

Womansuitcase175

Speaking of travel, we’ve compiled some advice for you on how to travel well in spite of illness or disability. We’ve got tips on handling medications (especially liquid ones—the TSA has new requirements you should understand), packing strategies, saving money when dining out, managing your energy in extremely busy times, getting help when you need it and more. How about you: What’s your favorite travel tip?

What's on our plate?

Learning new tricks. Once we leave school, it’s easy to get settled…we forget that to keep our minds active and healthy, we need to keep learning. Editrix Jenni is always studying something new (focusing on improving her writing and ChronicBabe projects), especially because she has a family history of Alzheimer’s. If you’re looking for something new to learn, check out Sharp Brains, a site dedicated to keeping your mind challenged!

Did you know?

Sins Invalid is looking for submissions from performers, writers, visual artists and other creative folks on topics of disability and sexuality for relationship-building and future collaboration. The deadline is April 25, 2009, so get creative, Babes! For more info email the organizers or call (510) 689-7198.

What we're up to lately...

Cramming tons of hair styling products into a tiny suitcase already jammed with a bazillion outfits and four pairs of shoes (you know, just in case)…reading up on Happiness 101…making tons of new friends and eating lots of tacos in Austin…staying hydrated with a cute orange Sigg water bottle (plastic is SO 2008)…practicing loving-kindness meditation as taught by Pema Chödrön…looking forward to the coming Spring…and sending you lots of love, Babes!

Fab five: sites we love right now

Gimp on the Go
Adam’s got tons of tips, anecdotes, and bulletin boards where you can talk with other disabled folks about travel. He’ll even answer your questions—just shoot him an email.

This is Not Your Suitcase.
So proclaims one of six adorable luggage tags from Wishing Fish. Brightly colored and full of attitude, these tags will reduce the chance of someone grabbing your bag by mistake.

DOT’s Advice for Disabled Travelers
Use a wheelchair? Not the prettiest site to look at, but this resource has lots of advice for navigating airports and can help you in planning your trip.

One Bag
Packing light has so many benefits: less hassle at the airport (and no baggage fees!), easier use of public transit, and reduced chance of losing your stuff. This site is jammed with advice and totally fantastic!

Borsa Bella on Etsy
One trick to organizing on trips is to separate items into smaller containers that are easy to spot and grab. Editrix Jenni loves zippered bags from this crafty lady, made with imported Japanese fabrics and just perfect for holding cosmetics or travel documents.

TAKE ACTION!

Get a hug no matter where you are. We’ve fallen head over heels for Hug Nation, John Styn’s awesome online creation. Get virtual hugs and follow the group on Twitter for daily reminders that, as John says, “the world would rather hug you than hurt you.”

Protect your passwords and take them anywhere you travel with RoboForm, a USB drive you plug into any computer so you can access your favorite web sites on the go (even at hotel business centers or internet cafes).

Frustrated that the market is going bonkers and you don’t understand how to manage your stocks? Try WeSeed, a site that lets you build a real portfolio with fake money and learn all about the stock market. We love it!
